Adaptogens and Essential Oils

Adaptogens and Essential Oils

Mother nature is all things in beauty, healing, forgiving, fierce and always trying to adapt to maintain life.

Every day there are thousands of processes going on in our bodies to maintain a healthy balance. A beautiful synergy of signals and warning systems alerting us to make a change. Some good examples are hunger and our internal thermostats. When these balance's break down through stress and illness we need a leg up or a boost.

Mother nature gives us adaptogens. Depending on your own state they will work for you to bring you into balance. Adaptogens are neither stimulants or sedatives they are both, they adapt to what our systems need at the time. Adaptogens are products of nature, chemistry has not been able to copy this one!

Stress, is the cause of so many health issues, and directly relates to accelerated aging, depressed immune system and premature death. We can not take stress out of our lives, short term stress is important for survival.

The adrenal glands cover our kidneys, they store and syntheses dopamine, norepinephrine , cortisol and epinephrine. Important hormones that send important messages to  tell us whether we need to stay and fight or run. The continual production of these messengers burn out and deplete all the systems involved, our thyroids and adrenals. Adaptogens normalise the body enabling this energy to be used more productively when the stress is not an imminent physical threat. They are both a relaxant and stimulant doing what is required to help the body cope with stress to sleep, relax or enhance your performance.

These are my top 5 essential oil adaptogens. They all blend well together.

Bergamot (citrus bergamia)

Cedarwood (cedrus atlantica)

Geranium (pelargonium graveolens)

Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)

Orange (citrus sinesis)
